2017 Conference Overview

Join over 300 CASA volunteers, program staff, attorneys and others at the 24th Annual Washington State CASA Conference!

Join us for over 40 sessions specifically tailored for CASA volunteers to provide the best possible advocacy for the children they serve in and out of dependency court.  From report-writing to college readiness for foster youth, our goal is to provide you the best possible training experience over the two days encompassing the conference.

This year’s conference is held for the first time ever in Southwestern Washington at the Vancouver Hilton in Vancouver, WA on November 4th and 5th.  Our Saturday lunch keynote will be presented by Dr. Caprice Hollins –“Cultural Competence:  Addressing Race Relations in the 21st Century” wherein Dr. Hollins will provide a common framework and understanding of what is meant by cultural competence and the work we need to do to grow in our ability to effectively engage across cultures and dismantle institutional racism.  Sunday morning’s plenary session will provide an update on the current state of the new “Department of Children, Youth and Families” by newly appointed Secretary Ross Hunter, including your questions.

We’re also pleased to our first ever “ICWA Institute” as part of this year’s conference.  The Institute begins on Friday, Nov 3rd with an all day training provide by the National Indian Child Welfare Association and continues with three sessions on Saturday specifically tailored by CASA program staff from around the state.  There’s no additional cost for participating in the institute beyond the normal conference registration fee; and participants will need to attend both all day Friday and the 3 sessions on Saturday in order to receive a certificate of completion.

Finally, we’re also using the conference as the opening of our first ever Shoe Drive for Foster Kids — a campaign to raise awareness of the number of children involved in our state’s child welfare system.  Our goal is to provide a pair of new shoes for every child in care across the state — and to kick off our campaign, you’ll receive $25 of your conference registration fee if you pledge to bring a pair of NEW shoes to the conference.

Designed for new and experienced CASAs alike, there is no other opportunity like the annual WaCASA statewide conference.  Please join us — we hope to see you there!
